Storms on the Downs and what they do to garage doors
Toowoomba weather can turn quickly. On 26/10/2025 storms across the region brought down large trees and powerlines and caused flash flooding, and council warned residents about hazards in the high winds (Toowoomba Regional Council). The next weekend, a large hailstorm led to 107 SES call-outs across the region by Sunday evening while Ergon crews worked to get the power back on (Toowoomba Regional Council). Earlier, in March 2025, ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred brought strong winds, fallen trees and long power outages to Toowoomba (Inside Local Government, 14/03/2025).
Wind is hard on garage doors. Steel-Line, a door maker, says studies of cyclones found that a common failure was roller doors coming out of their guides, which let wind and water into the house, and it tells owners to check their home's wind load requirements with the local council (Steel-Line). If a storm has damaged your door, or you are replacing an old one, read new doors and installation for the questions to ask about wind-rated doors.
Before you ring anyone
- Rule out the simple causes first: power to the opener, the remote battery, the safety beams, and a manual lock that someone has left on. The garage door won't open checklist goes through each one.
- Do not force a stuck door. With a broken spring or cable, a door can be very heavy or drop without warning. B&D, a major door maker, says DIY spring repair "is highly discouraged due to the complexity and potential danger involved" (B&D).
- Take a photo or a short video of the door, and of any gap, bend or damage.
- Write down what kind of door it is: roller, sectional (panel) or tilt; single or double; manual or automatic; and the motor brand if you can see it.
Fix it, service it or replace it?
Plenty of faults can be repaired: a broken spring, a frayed cable, a bent track, worn rollers or an opener that needs adjusting. B&D suggests a service in the first 12 months after a door is installed and every two years after that (B&D). It is worth pricing a new door when the old one is badly damaged, when parts are no longer made, or when you want an automatic door, better wind performance or a new look. The price guide puts published ranges for repairs and new doors side by side.
Licences and electrical work
Queensland requires a QBCC licence for building work valued over $3,300 (QBCC). A new double door with a motor can easily pass that figure. If your quote is over $3,300, ask for the licence number and look it up on the free QBCC licence search at my.qbcc.qld.gov.au. Putting in a new power point for an opener is electrical work, and a licensed electrician has to do it (Electrical Safety Office).
Common questions
Why won't my garage door open?
The most common causes are no power to the opener, a flat remote battery, blocked or misaligned safety beams, a manual lock or release left on, and a broken spring. B&D lists misaligned sensors, signal interference and flat remote batteries as reasons a door may not respond (B&D). Go through the checklist.
Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
Best not to. Springs are under high tension, and B&D says DIY spring repair "is highly discouraged due to the complexity and potential danger involved" (B&D). See springs and cables.
How often should a garage door be serviced?
B&D suggests a service in the first 12 months after installation and every two years after that (B&D). Check your own door's warranty too, because some warranties depend on regular servicing.
